My Rules

1. Credit Cards - Not everyone thinks they are a terrible thing, and they aren't, as long as they are used properly. I had a credit card once, for about 5 months, then it went to collections. Since then, I have had no credit. I use a prepaid Mastercard for any online purchases, etc. I will never own a "credit" card. Once I am stable and on my own feet, I will then move up to a secured card.

2. Online Banking - Always use it. I use a credit union that does not charge me fees so long as I have a recurring direct deposit into my account, which saves me about $40 a month, seeing as I use my debit card frequently. The only thing I use a teller for is cashing checks, so it is instant and I have no holding fees.

3. Found Money - Now, this may seem a bit petty, but in the grand scheme of things, if there's no one to claim it, then the universe is cutting you some slack. I always pick up spare change or even bills when I am lucky enough to come across one with no owner.

4. Shopping - I just don't shop as much as I used to, but when I do have to go shopping for groceries, etc., I make sure I bring along coupons, savings cards, and I am a master at knowing my prices. It truly is the best gift I could ever receive from my mother. Our current grocery bill is about 200-250 per month for a family of three.

5. Coupons - Continuing on coupons, I would really like to say you have to know what you eat frequently for them to work properly. If you're buying something ONLY because you have a coupon for it, then it's not worth it in the long run. You'll end up with a lot of waste. Only use coupons you know will save you money because you ALREADY buy those products.

6. Saving - Let's face it, not everyone has 10% to put into a savings fund, especially me. My current income is exactly $290. So, I pay myself first with $10. As long as you're putting away something into an emergency fund, and something into a savings account, that's better than having nothing.
